Breakfast with the Birds

Intro to Birding

Saturday, May 4, 7:30-11am; Raindate Sunday, May 5

Our feathered friends are migrating north! Join us at Lachat Farm - a prime birding locale - to learn how to identify the birds around us. Beginner or expert alike are welcome. The morning will start with some coffee and pastries from Kneads Bakery and a brief how-to session on two highly recommended FREE birding apps from the “Cornell Lab of Ornithology” that make it easier to identify birds not just by sight…but by their songs! (Note: You might wish to download “Merlin” and “eBird” on your iPhone before our workshop)

Then we’ll head outdoors! With its open fields, gardens, barn and barn yard, forests, and wetlands, Lachat attracts a wide variety of birds. Early May is prime birding season because, if we are lucky, we should see warblers, vireos, flycatchers and other birds who are just passing through!

Our guide will be Charlie Stebbins, a skilled and entertaining amateur birdwatcher who will captivate you with his knowledge. It is sure to be fun! Charlie works closely with the Connecticut Audubon Society and the Aspetuck Land Trust. Besides leading local bird and plant walks, Charlie has spearheaded numerous land conservation and native plant restorations throughout upper Fairfield County.

Bring good binoculars if you have them (we will bring some extras.). Wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet. Children 12 and over welcome to attend with an adult. No problem if you need to leave early, feel free to stay for as long as you can!
